Intro

Not too many people remember that Aaron's series debut was as a villain in "Twilight of a Nation" in 1988. He also starred in "The Gods & the Demons of Zu Mt" with his cute rabbit hairdo in 1990. Both were minor but fairly significant roles as he made his first mark in the TVB ancient series, the gateway to stardom for many actors+singers in the recent years.

With his never-seem-to-age-cherubic-face at age 26, perhaps the leading role of Lok Fung - a confused, clumsy, mischievous, innocent young hero - in "Revelation of the Last Hero" was rather suitable. He is pursued by multiple ladies likely to happen in many series, the ones who are bigshot actresses now and then. The intricate side stories as well as Leung Ka Yan's comedy indeed would make this a memorable series from the 90's.

Story

There are many characters and stories packed into 25 episodes. I've drawn out what I consider to be major and more memorable, and they are as follows:

Story 1 - Aaron's Love Rectangle

I'm sure hundreds and hundreds of websites of Aaron, Noel, Ada, and Fennie tell this part of the story many many times so I'll make it as brief as possible.

Aaron falls head over heels for his 'Moon Lady' (aka Ming Yuet), Ada. Ada lives with her mother and many other ladies on a ship. Over time, Ada falls for Aaron also and this romance between the two seems to sail pretty smoothly.. but no, it wouldn't be fun if this was the end of it.

Aaron has an all-time helper, someone he can reeeallly count on to be there whenever his ass is in trouble. This girl is Noel, a daughter of an infamous prophet. Noel herself prophesizes and she has a decent kungfu also. She develops a crush on Aaron also, her potential 'soulmate,' but for the time being, she remains a faithful friend of Aaron because he is totally in love with... Ada. Noel, if you ask me, is a very sacrificing character in a way, much like her role in 'The Lone-Star Swordsman' with Ekin Cheng.

Aaron is fancied (yet tortured and teased) by another girl, a totally spoiled, tomboyish, rather violent but rather cute Fennie. Fennie is from some outside cult not sure of the true origin and is the daughter of Hik Lin Mong Sun (Leung Ka Yan). At first, she gets in many unpleasant encounters with Aaron - but in time, she too, falls for him, probably because of the fact that he is so naive (unlike her) and hasn't reached the state of maturity yet.

Okay so this sets up this love rectangle thingie for the core of this series, not THE core but still, a big chunk of it. So which lucky lady would end up with Aaron eventually?

Noel, although she does many goods for the sake of humanity and Aaron, is ill-fated with a prophecy that she'd die when she hits 20. When Aaron finds that out, he sorta kinda neglects Ada to spend more time with her while she's alive. Ada becomes very jealous when she sees Aaron acting this way, so she tries to kill Noel in a very evil way. But Noel survives, later comes back to haunt Ada, thereby making Aaron realize the potential evil lying in Ada. Because of this event, Noel's 'lifeline' on her palm miraculously extends and now she can live forever if she wanted to. As more time goes by, Aaron realizes that he loves Noel and they end up together, figures.

So what happens to Ada? That, more to be discussed soon so read along!

So what happens to Fennie? Yeah, she loved Aaron also. Yeah, she wanted him too. Yeah, she did a lot of things for Aaron as well. Aaron has some hard time choosing later on because although he likes Noel, he's not sure how to turn down Fennie. The ultimate solution? Take both women! Noel even offered that she wouldn't mind living together with her and Aaron (in other words, 'sharing.' I guess Noel has an A in that course, not sure if she's being considerate or what not, it's a judgment call). But in the end, Fennie has found herself a new love interest, a handsome noble from some other land that looks exactly like Aaron, leaving the series on a lighter note for her ending although she didn't end up with who she initially liked.

Extra babbling: Contest - who would win Aaron's heart?

Beauty - the three girls that liked Aaron all had some unique beauty of their own. This one's gotta be a draw.

Personality - Ada turned into a villain, this was a definite no-no. Even though it's Aaron's fault that he neglected her for Noel, to go as far as trying to kill Noel? There is a limit to how much a jealousy can justify, and what Ada did was to cross that limit. So no, she doesn't win this part of the contest. PLUS - I personally liked seeing her with Frankie better. Kekeke. Better match in height!

Noel's character was probably the most ideal 'wife,' she was very supportive and a give-it-all type of gal. As we know, she was the final winner of this contest so no more comment.

Fennie, on the other hand, I'd conceive as the ideal 'girlfriend.' She would've surely kept the relationship exciting with her liveliness. Her new boyfriend in the end, Aaron-look-alike, is surely a lucky guy!

Kung Fu Skills - eh this one's tough. Why tough? Because I forget who had the strongest martial arts skills. If my memory serves me correct, Fennie would win because coming from the eccentric cult outside of the region, she had some weird kung fu moves. What does this has to do with the contest? You see, if Aaron stayed weak as he did in the beginning, someone would have to save his butt all the time and ideally, the one with strongest kung fu would be the best. Tee hee. :)

Intelligence - Noel was smart which explains why she was able to help Aaron all the time, but being the righteous girl she is, she'd not use any dirty tricks in most circumstances. Being manipulative and tricky is something Ada was good at. And Fennie.. hmm.. could not really do much on her own so it's a draw between Ada & Noel. =P

Of course, what matters as much as how Aaron felt? So congrats to Noel, good luck to Fennie, and R.I.P. for Ada. Boo.

Story 2 - Lau Kong's Psychohood Sketch

If Frankie's character is a dynamic one, Lau Kong is static - that is - he was evil from the start till the end. As the series progresses, he becomes even more evil (apparently that was possible).

Aaron was sort of like an errand boy at the kung fu place that Lau Kong Chung Hung (Lau Kong) owned. Everyone picked on Aaron and the fact that he knew no kung fu whatsoever didn't help. Lau Kong had 3 children : Wok Kwong (Lee Sing Cheung), Chow Sik (Lau Sau Ping), and Wok Mun (Derek Kwok). Wok Kwong however, died early in the series due to his chronic illness. Note, this was probably the ONLY time Lau Kong actually cried in the whole series. Not sure if he really felt sad about his son's death but I guess every parent feels the same.

20 or so years ago, Lau Kong was friends with Law Lok Lam and a prophet played by Lam Seung Mo. In the power fight, Lau Kong chopped off Law Lok Lam's legs and became the number one person. Law Lok Lam ended up in some island, and Lam Seung Mo ended up on some island as well, living in seclusion. Lam Seung Mo has 2 children, Frankie and Noel.

I'm writing a total BS because I can't really remember the story very well. What does happen is that Lau Kong eventually goes crazy trying to have more power and ends up killing his own daughter and her husband (Dai Zi Wai). He first made her husband into a robot and tried to have the two kill each other but they end up dying together (a bit of relief here).

Aaron somehow meets Law Lok Lam in seclusion and learns some powerful kung fu. He then teams up with Frankie in the end to kill Lau Kong. The only combo play by the 2 male leads here, good fighting scenes. :)

Of course the story wouldn't end here just killing Lau Kong, as Aaron faces a greater task... of getting rid of Frankie.

Story 3 - Poor Frankie

There are some good people, and some bad people in this series. Actually let me rephrase that - there are mostly good people and 2 bad people in this series. Ada is in between although she does slide over to the latter side but anyway, Lau Kong is definitely one of the two.

Another one would be Frankie, probably the most empathic, sympathetic, dramatic, dynamic character in the series. If it weren't for him, this series would not have a plot. So here goes Frankie's little story.

Frankie is the eldest child of the prophet, Lam Seung Mo. Although he is Noel's older brother, they both have stories of their own and the series doesn't seem to focus much on their sibling-hood or the closeness of it because there was none. It's kind of sad to see that Noel rooted for his death in the end because if there should be one person to embrace his faults, shouldn't it be his own sister?

But there actually is a reason as to why Noel and Frankie don't share much of a bond. Thanks to having a noteable prophet as their father, Frankie was considered a potentially evil child. Given this, he was isolated from his family for a long time, growing up under strict rules and punishments for his idle wrongdoings. Noel and Frankie didn't even know that they were brothers and sisters when they first met. Frankie had a harsh childhood because of something he wasn't, but was going to be.

At first, Lam Seung Mo's attempt to somehow 'stop' his son's fate of being evil seemed to pay off. When Frankie accidentally killed a person (or thought he did) in the beginning, he was very consumed by the guilt. He was the most innocent person anyone could ever imagine to meet. However, all hell broke loose when he met Aaron in his life.

Frankie, maybe as a compensation for his lost childhood, was an aspiring young guy wanting to succeed. He was above Aaron in all aspects - skills and ambitions - but it was Aaron who always got all the luck. Even his own family was more devoted to Aaron. Worst of all, when the love of his life Ada came, he once again had to lose her to Aaron. Basically, it's all about the inferiority complex again.

Frankie eventually kills his own father. Ada, after trying to kill Noel, gets majorly rejected by Aaron. The two, Frankie and Ada, click together immediately and get married. But deep in her heart, Ada still is unwilling to forget Aaron which upsets Frankie. Jealousy on top of his wanting to become number one makes it his prominent goal to get rid of Aaron. So the two guys, once friends, battle and he loses and dies. Ada commits suicide upon this and dies in Aaron's arms. In the end, Aaron and Noel are passing by as they see a woman who looks exactly like Ada entering a brothel. When Noel asks Aaron whether he wants to check if it's really Ada or not, Aaron simply refuses saying that he has found the best girl in his life so there is no need.

SO I GUESS ADA REALLY DIED. For many years I really thought the prostitute was her, for she was a conniving woman and magically survived after she tried to die or something. Guess not.

I'm not sure if Ada really loved Frankie even once. I'm not sure if she committed suicide because she was traumatized by his death or if she was just guilty for all the bad things she had done. Either way, this leaves a really depressing ending for Frankie because he was never truly loved by anyone while he was alive. Not even one person.

Final note : I think this was Ada's series debut and she was so convincing as a vixen that it earned her more of the similar roles in the future. Yay for her.

Extra babbling : Character Comparisons

I find Frankie's character from this series very similar to Jimmy Au's in the series "The War Heroes." The two main guy characters from both series started out as good friends. (Frankie & Aaron, Jimmy & Roger). One of them is always easy-going and a goof-off (Aaron, Roger) and the other is always ambitious and has some sort of a detrimental background. Frankie, needless to say, and Jimmy had to live in a hideout and was looked down upon because one of his village people committed a crime in the past and the whole village was ordered to live in seclusion. Then, the girl factor comes in (Ada, Kitty). They both like the same girl, but the girl always likes the funny guy. The rejected guy crouches in the corner and grows resentment and finally explodes, wanting to kill the main dude, but ends up dying instead.

This really makes me mad, but unlike I did with the War Heroes, I don't want to rewrite the ending for this series because Ada didn't end up with Aaron. Whether her heart was true or not, she was with Frankie with some time being so I think he was better off than Jimmy. =)

A hate-note to Frankie's dad - 'Your son became exactly what you prophesized he would be. I hope you go to hell!'

Story 4 - A String of Touching Romance

So what's this 'touching' romance about? Haven't I talked enough about Aaron and Frankie and their gals? Or even Lau Sau Ping and Dai Zi Wai? Could there possibly be more love stories in this series?!

I thought maybe it'd be nice to put minor characters in a spotlight once in a while.

I mentioned earlier that Lau Kong had 3 children. His youngest son, Si Ma Wuk Mun, was played by Derek Kwok. His love interest was his lifelong acquaintance and a friend (sort of) was played by Yiu Jing Ching (for those who might not know her, she played one of Tony Leung's 4 wives in the series 'Hap Hak Hang.' She starred as Tung Yee). I found this side story somewhat intriguing, less complicated than the others.

Derek and Yiu were both fairly crooked individuals. Derek found some sort of a pleasure in torturing Aaron a lot and for some reason, I don't think he was all that chummy with his older brother either.

Yiu was the only daughter of the 2nd man of the kung fu place that Lau Kong owned. He was Lau Kong's kung fu brother and he participated in helping Lau Kong obtaining power by harming Hung Chan (Law Lok Lam). This role btw was played by Chow Teet Wah. Basically Derek and Yiu grew up together in the same place. Anyhow, having lost her mother at an early age, Yiu grew up to be spoiled and selfish. This wouldn't make a very good combination with Derek, who too was selfish being the last child. Moreover, Yiu was actually engaged to Derek's older brother. Since she mentioned "the change of heart," it might've even been that she was actually in love with the older brother first but abandoned him for the sake of Derek. Derek was somewhat ambitious and didn't want their secret romance to ruin his future, so although he loved her, he kept promising her over and over that he'd eventually marry her... someday.

And for something I can't remember, Derek and Yiu were apart for a very long time in the series. I think Lau Kong killed Yiu's dad in order to keep the secret about Hung Chan or whatever else the reason was. To avenge her father's death, Yiu tried to kill Lau Kong but instead got severely injured. Derek sees her right before she dies in his arms as he finally whispers to her his words of marriage.

Derek then finds his life very meaningless so he becomes a monk. He then tries to reform his father which doesn't really work. After all this ordeal, in the end he can be seen at the restaurant owned by Ada's mom and Leung Ka Yan, eating vegetables.
